Surah Al Baqarah

2:1
'Alif-Lām-Mīm
Alif, Lam, Meem.
2:2
Dhālika Al-Kitābu Lā Rayba  ۛ  Fīhi  ۛ  Hudáan Lilmuttaqīna
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -
2:3
Al-Ladhīna Yu'uminūna Bil-Ghaybi Wa Yuqīmūna Aş-Şalāata Wa Mimmā Razaqnāhum Yunfiqūna
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,
2:4
Wa Al-Ladhīna Yu'uminūna Bimā 'Unzila 'Ilayka Wa Mā 'Unzila Min Qablika Wa Bil-'Ākhirati Hum Yūqinūna
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
2:5
'Ūlā'ika `Alá Hudáan Min Rabbihim  ۖ  Wa 'Ūlā'ika Humu Al-Mufliĥūna
Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.
2:6
'Inna Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Sawā'un `Alayhim 'A 'Andhartahum 'Am Lam Tundhirhum Lā Yu'uminūna
Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.
2:7
Khatama Al-Lahu `Alá Qulūbihim Wa `Alá Sam`ihim  ۖ  Wa `Alá 'Abşārihim Ghishāwatun  ۖ  Wa Lahum `Adhābun `Ažīmun
Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.
2:8
Wa Mina An-Nāsi Man Yaqūlu 'Āmannā Bil-Lahi Wa Bil-Yawmi Al-'Ākhiri Wa Mā Hum Bimu'uminīna
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers.
2:9
Yukhādi`ūna Al-Laha Wa Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Wa Mā Yakhda`ūna 'Illā 'Anfusahum Wa Mā Yash`urūna
They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.
2:10
Fī Qulūbihim Marađun Fazādahumu Al-Lahu Marađāan  ۖ  Wa Lahum `Adhābun 'Alīmun Bimā Kānū Yakdhibūna
In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
2:11
Wa 'Idhā Qīla Lahum Lā Tufsidū Fī Al-'Arđi Qālū 'Innamā Naĥnu Muşliĥūna
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."
2:12
'Alā 'Innahum Humu Al-Mufsidūna Wa Lakin Lā Yash`urūna
Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.
2:13
Wa 'Idhā Qīla Lahum 'Āminū Kamā 'Āmana An-Nāsu Qālū 'Anu'uminu Kamā 'Āmana As-Sufahā'u  ۗ  'Alā 'Innahum Humu As-Sufahā'u Wa Lakin Lā Ya`lamūna
And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.
2:14
Wa 'Idhā Laqū Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Qālū 'Āmannā Wa 'Idhā Khalaw 'Ilá Shayāţīnihim Qālū 'Innā Ma`akum 'Innamā Naĥnu Mustahzi'ūna
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
2:15
Al-Lahu Yastahzi'u Bihim Wa Yamudduhum Fī Ţughyānihim Ya`mahūna
[But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.
2:16
'Ūlā'ika Al-Ladhīna Ashtaraw Ađ-Đalālata Bil-Hudá Famā Rabiĥat Tijāratuhum Wa Mā Kānū Muhtadīna
Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.
2:17
Mathaluhum Kamathali Al-Ladhī Astawqada Nārāan Falammā 'Ađā'at Mā Ĥawlahu Dhahaba Al-Lahu Binūrihim Wa Tarakahum Fī Žulumātin Lā Yubşirūna
Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.
2:18
Şummun Bukmun `Umyun Fahum Lā Yarji`ūna
Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path].
2:19
'Aw Kaşayyibin Mina As-Samā'i Fīhi Žulumātun Wa Ra`dun Wa Barqun Yaj`alūna 'Aşābi`ahum Fī 'Ādhānihim Mina Aş-Şawā`iqi Ĥadhara Al-Mawti Wa  ۚ  Allāhu Muĥīţun Bil-Kāfirīna
Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers.
2:20
Yakādu Al-Barqu Yakhţafu 'Abşārahum  ۖ  Kullamā 'Ađā'a Lahum Mashaw Fīhi Wa 'Idhā 'Ažlama `Alayhim Qāmū  ۚ  Wa Law Shā'a Al-Lahu Ladhahaba Bisam`ihim Wa 'Abşārihim  ۚ  'Inna Al-Laha `Alá Kulli Shay'in Qadīrun
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
2:21
Yā 'Ayyuhā An-Nāsu A`budū Rabbakumu Al-Ladhī Khalaqakum Wa Al-Ladhīna Min Qablikum La`allakum Tattaqūna
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -
2:22
Al-Ladhī Ja`ala Lakumu Al-'Arđa Firāshāan Wa As-Samā'a Binā'an Wa 'Anzala Mina As-Samā'i Mā'an Fa'akhraja Bihi Mina Ath-Thamarāti Rizqāan Lakum  ۖ  Falā Taj`alū Lillahi 'Andādāan Wa 'Antum Ta`lamūna
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].
2:23
Wa 'In Kuntum Fī Raybin Mimmā Nazzalnā `Alá `Abdinā Fa'tū Bisūratin Min Mithlihi Wa Ad`ū Shuhadā'akum Min Dūni Al-Lahi 'In Kuntum Şādiqīna
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful.
2:24
Fa'in Lam Taf`alū Wa Lan Taf`alū Fa Attaqū An-Nāra Allatī Waqūduhā An-Nāsu Wa Al-Ĥijāratu  ۖ  'U`iddat Lilkāfirīna
But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.
2:25
Wa Bashshiri Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Wa `Amilū Aş-Şāliĥāti 'Anna Lahum Jannātin Tajrī Min Taĥtihā Al-'Anhāru  ۖ  Kullamā Ruziqū Minhā Min Thamaratin Rizqāan  ۙ  Qālū Hādhā Al-Ladhī Ruziqnā Min Qablu  ۖ  Wa 'Utū Bihi Mutashābihāan  ۖ  Wa Lahum Fīhā 'Azwājun Muţahharatun  ۖ  Wa Hum Fīhā Khālidūna
And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.
2:26
'Inna Al-Laha Lā Yastaĥyī 'An Yađriba Mathalāan Mā Ba`ūđatan Famā Fawqahā  ۚ  Fa'ammā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Faya`lamūna 'Annahu Al-Ĥaqqu Min Rabbihim  ۖ  Wa 'Ammā Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Fayaqūlūna Mādhā 'Arāda Al-Lahu Bihadhā Mathalāan  ۘ  Yuđillu Bihi Kathīrāan Wa Yahdī Bihi Kathīrāan  ۚ  Wa Mā Yuđillu Bihi 'Illā Al-Fāsiqīna
Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,
2:27
Al-Ladhīna Yanquđūna `Ahda Al-Lahi Min Ba`di Mīthāqihi Wa Yaqţa`ūna Mā 'Amara Al-Lahu Bihi 'An Yūşala Wa Yufsidūna Fī Al-'Arđi  ۚ  'Ūlā'ika Humu Al-Khāsirūna
Who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers.
2:28
Kayfa Takfurūna Bil-Lahi Wa Kuntum 'Amwātāan Fa'aĥyākum  ۖ  Thumma Yumītukum Thumma Yuĥyīkum Thumma 'Ilayhi Turja`ūna
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
2:29
Huwa Al-Ladhī Khalaqa Lakum Mā Fī Al-'Arđi Jamī`āan Thumma Astawá 'Ilá As-Samā'i Fasawwāhunna Sab`a Samāwātin  ۚ  Wa Huwa Bikulli Shay'in `Alīmun
It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.
2:30
Wa 'Idh Qāla Rabbuka Lilmalā'ikati 'Innī Jā`ilun Fī Al-'Arđi Khalīfatan  ۖ  Qālū 'Ataj`alu Fīhā Man Yufsidu Fīhā Wa Yasfiku Ad-Dimā'a Wa Naĥnu Nusabbiĥu Biĥamdika Wa Nuqaddisu Laka  ۖ  Qāla 'Innī 'A`lamu Mā Lā Ta`lamūna
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
2:31
Wa `Allama 'Ādama Al-'Asmā'a Kullahā Thumma `Arađahum `Alá Al-Malā'ikati Faqāla 'Anbi'ūnī Bi'asmā'i Hā'uulā' 'In Kuntum Şādiqīna
And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."
2:32
Qālū Subĥānaka Lā `Ilma Lanā 'Illā Mā `Allamtanā  ۖ  'Innaka 'Anta Al-`Alīmu Al-Ĥakīmu
They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."
2:33
Qāla Yā 'Ādamu 'Anbi'hum Bi'asmā'ihim  ۖ  Falammā 'Anba'ahum Bi'asmā'ihim Qāla 'Alam 'Aqul Lakum 'Innī 'A`lamu Ghayba As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđi Wa 'A`lamu Mā Tubdūna Wa Mā Kuntum Taktumūna
He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."
2:34
Wa 'Idh Qulnā Lilmalā'ikati Asjudū Li'dama Fasajadū 'Illā 'Iblīsa 'Abá Wa Astakbara Wa Kāna Mina Al-Kāfirīna
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
2:35
Wa Qulnā Yā 'Ādamu Askun 'Anta Wa Zawjuka Al-Jannata Wa Kulā Minhā Raghadāan Ĥaythu Shi'tumā Wa Lā Taqrabā Hadhihi Ash-Shajarata Fatakūnā Mina Až-Žālimīna
And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."
2:36
Fa'azallahumā Ash-Shayţānu `Anhā Fa'akhrajahumā Mimmā Kānā Fīhi  ۖ  Wa Qulnā Ahbiţū Ba`đukum Liba`đin `Adūwun  ۖ  Wa Lakum Fī Al-'Arđi Mustaqarrun Wa Matā`un 'Ilá Ĥīnin
But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."
2:37
Fatalaqqá 'Ādamu Min Rabbihi Kalimātin Fatāba `Alayhi  ۚ  'Innahu Huwa At-Tawwābu Ar-Raĥīmu
Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
2:38
Qulnā Ahbiţū Minhā Jamī`āan  ۖ  Fa'immā Ya'tiyannakum Minnī Hudáan Faman Tabi`a Hudāya Falā Khawfun `Alayhim Wa Lā Hum Yaĥzanūna
We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
2:39
Wa Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Wa Kadhdhabū Bi'āyātinā 'Ūlā'ika 'Aşĥābu  ۖ  An-Nāri Hum Fīhā Khālidūna
And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."
2:40
Yā Banī 'Isrā'īla Adhkurū Ni`matiya Allatī 'An`amtu `Alaykum Wa 'Awfū Bi`ahdī 'Ūfi Bi`ahdikum Wa 'Īyāya Fārhabūni
O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant [upon you] that I will fulfill your covenant [from Me], and be afraid of [only] Me.
2:41
Wa 'Āminū Bimā 'Anzaltu Muşaddiqāan Limā Ma`akum Wa Lā Takūnū 'Awwala Kāfirin Bihi  ۖ  Wa Lā Tashtarū Bi'āyātī Thamanāan Qalīlāan Wa 'Īyāya Fa Attaqūni
And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me.
2:42
Wa Lā Talbisū Al-Ĥaqqa Bil-Bāţili Wa Taktumū Al-Ĥaqqa Wa 'Antum Ta`lamūna
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
2:43
Wa 'Aqīmū Aş-Şalāata Wa 'Ātū Az-Zakāata Wa Arka`ū Ma`a Ar-Rāki`īna
And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
2:44
'Ata'murūna An-Nāsa Bil-Birri Wa Tansawna 'Anfusakum Wa 'Antum Tatlūna Al-Kitāba  ۚ  'Afalā Ta`qilūna
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
2:45
Wa Asta`īnū Biş-Şabri Wa Aş-Şalāati  ۚ  Wa 'Innahā Lakabīratun 'Illā `Alá Al-Khāshi`īna
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah ]
2:46
Al-Ladhīna Yažunnūna 'Annahum Mulāqū Rabbihim Wa 'Annahum 'Ilayhi Rāji`ūna
Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.
2:47
Yā Banī 'Isrā'īla Adhkurū Ni`matiya Allatī 'An`amtu `Alaykum Wa 'Annī Fađđaltukum `Alá Al-`Ālamīna
O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.
2:48
Wa Attaqū Yawmāan Lā Tajzī Nafsun `An Nafsin Shay'āan Wa Lā Yuqbalu Minhā Shafā`atun Wa Lā Yu'ukhadhu Minhā `Adlun Wa Lā Hum Yunşarūna
And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be aided.
2:49
Wa 'Idh Najjaynākum Min 'Āli Fir`awna Yasūmūnakum Sū'a Al-`Adhābi Yudhabbiĥūna 'Abnā'akum Wa Yastaĥyūna Nisā'akum  ۚ  Wa Fī Dhālikum Balā'un Min Rabbikum `Ažīmun
And [recall] when We saved your forefathers from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
2:50
Wa 'Idh Faraqnā Bikumu Al-Baĥra Fa'anjaynākum Wa 'Aghraqnā 'Āla Fir`awna Wa 'Antum Tanžurūna
And [recall] when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on.
2:51
Wa 'Idh Wā`adnā Mūsá 'Arba`īna Laylatan Thumma Attakhadhtumu Al-`Ijla Min Ba`dihi Wa 'Antum Žālimūna
And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him, while you were wrongdoers.
2:52
Thumma `Afawnā `Ankum Min Ba`di Dhālika La`allakum Tashkurūna
Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful.
2:53
Wa 'Idh 'Ātaynā Mūsá Al-Kitāba Wa Al-Furqāna La`allakum Tahtadūna
And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion that perhaps you would be guided.
2:54
Wa 'Idh Qāla Mūsá Liqawmihi Yā Qawmi 'Innakum Žalamtum 'Anfusakum Biāttikhādhikumu Al-`Ijla Fatūbū 'Ilá Bāri'ikum Fāqtulū 'Anfusakum Dhālikum Khayrun Lakum `Inda Bāri'ikum Fatāba `Alaykum  ۚ  'Innahu Huwa At-Tawwābu Ar-Raĥīmu
And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
2:55
Wa 'Idh Qultum Yā Mūsá Lan Nu'umina Laka Ĥattá Nará Al-Laha Jahratan Fa'akhadhatkumu Aş-Şā`iqatu Wa 'Antum Tanžurūna
And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.
2:56
Thumma Ba`athnākum Min Ba`di Mawtikum La`allakum Tashkurūna
Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.
2:57
Wa Žallalnā `Alaykumu Al-Ghamāma Wa 'Anzalnā `Alaykumu Al-Manna Wa As-Salwá  ۖ  Kulū Min Ţayyibāti Mā Razaqnākum  ۖ  Wa Mā Žalamūnā Wa Lakin Kānū 'Anfusahum Yažlimūna
And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves.
2:58
Wa 'Idh Qulnā Adkhulū Hadhihi Al-Qaryata Fakulū Minhā Ĥaythu Shi'tum Raghadāan Wa Adkhulū Al-Bāba Sujjadāan Wa Qūlū Ĥiţţatun Naghfir Lakum Khaţāyākum  ۚ  Wa Sanazīdu Al-Muĥsinīna
And [recall] when We said, "Enter this city and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and] abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens.' We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."
2:59
Fabaddala Al-Ladhīna Žalamū Qawlāan Ghayra Al-Ladhī Qīla Lahum Fa'anzalnā `Alá Al-Ladhīna Žalamū Rijzāan Mina As-Samā'i Bimā Kānū Yafsuqūna
But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.
2:60
Wa 'Idh Astasqá Mūsá Liqawmihi Faqulnā Ađrib Bi`aşāka Al-Ĥajara  ۖ  Fānfajarat Minhu Athnatā `Ashrata `Aynāan  ۖ  Qad `Alima Kullu 'Unāsin Mashrabahum  ۖ  Kulū Wa Ashrabū Min Rizqi Al-Lahi Wa Lā Ta`thaw Fī Al-'Arđi Mufsidīna
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
